What is Dustless Blasting?

Dustless blasting works by blasting abrasives mixed with water at high speeds to quickly remove contaminants or coating from any surface. After dustless blasting, the surface will be ready for restoration. Dustless blasting is commonly used for automotive to remove rust and bando leaving the car ready for a new paint job and restoration. Additionally, dustless blasting can be used for marine, graffiti removal, line stripe removal, wood restoration, brick restoration, heavy equipment, and more.

What Kind of Abrasives are used for Dustless Blasting?

Common Abrasives used for dustless blasting include:

  • Recycled bottle glass

  • Garnet

  • Blast sand

  • Sugar sand

  • Coal slag

  • Copper slag

  • Glass beads

  • Sodium Bicarbonate

  • Walnut shell

  • Corn cob

  • + More

The ideal abrasive or media used depends on the type of project and surface you will be blasting.

Some rules of thumb when choosing an abrasive are to pick an abrasive the mixes easy with water and is consistent in size. Abrasives that are inconsistent in size may cause uneven finishes and have a higher chance of a malfunctioning dustless blaster.

What Safety Equipment is Needed for Dustless Blasting?

The recommended Dustless Blasting Equipment includes:

  • Earplugs

  • Goggles/Mask

  • Tarp

  • Gloves

Before using the dustless blaster, you want to make sure you are using the right equipment to ensure safe blasting.

Earplugs used will help protect your ears from the sound of the dustless blaster which becomes very loud for the person blasting.

A pair of goggles or mask is also good to use because the water and abrasive mix will sometimes repel off the surface and get near your eyes and face. For this reason, a bodysuit is also suggested during the dustless blasting process.

A tarp is used to help during the cleanup process.

You can place a tarp underneath the blasting area and simply pick it up after blasting and dispose of it or on the side to keep all the residue in one place for easier cleanup.

Watch the video below to see how we used a tent with a tarp on the sides to dustless blast a classic Mustang.
